(0 review)

Taking place in the years leading up to the First Reform Bill of 1832, Middlemarch explores nearly every subject of concern to modern life: art, religion, science, politics, self, society, human relationships. Among her characters are some of the most remarkable portraits in English literature: Dorothea Brooke, the heroine, idealistic but naive; Rosamond Vincy, beautiful and egoistic: Edward Casaubon, the dry-as-dust scholar: Tertius Lydgate, the brilliant but morally-flawed physician: the passionate artist Will Ladislaw: and Fred Vincey and Mary Garth, childhood sweethearts whose charming courtship is one of the many humorous elements in the novel's rich comic vein.

George Eliot

George Elliott's real name is Mary Ann Evans. She was an English novelist, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She used male pseudonyms to take her work seriously and to hide her private life from public view. Notable works include "The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silasmarner (1861), Middle March (1871–72), Daniel Derunda (1876)". Her 1872 work Middlemarch was cited by Martin Amis and Julian Burns as the greatest novels in English. Most of George Elliott's novels are well-known for their background in provincial England and for their realism and psychological insights. George Elliott was born on 22 November 1819 in Naniton, Warwickshire, England. She died on 22 December 1880 at the age of 61 in Chelsea, Middlesex, England. She was buried in Highgret Cemetery.
